Just over a year ago I purchased this fibro shack in a small town on the Tasman Peninsula, Tasmania. The photographs here taken March 6, 2014 was just after settlement of the house....I was out of debt, wanted to live a simpler lifestyle...room to breathe....room to garden...and room to grow. I was already on the pathway....it was one day over one year five months that I had steeped out of a bus from Hobart and on arriving was over whelmed by a feeling of having a sense of place and this is where I was to be..........for how long I did not ask myself at that moment............it was a place to be for the moment... for the now.

Wandering along a beach recently I found two pieces of rope that had been washed up with the last tide. The looped rope fragment reminded me of the returning of ideas, thoughts, places, patterns that seem to arise through out life. The last while has seen me return to a place I first visited as a teenager. A place where I felt I had been before, a place of comfort and strange familiarity. On visiting the area more recently the same feelings arose.

Over these last months I have been looping like the peice of rope and returning to this place. Tooing and frowing like the ebb and flow of the tide that bought the fragments of rope up onto the beach. I feel compelled to continue to explore the pathway to this place, it is a destination that calls, touches something deep within and brings up feelings that are unexplainable in words.

An adventure has begun. My father was a professional fisherman along the south coast of Victoria, from Anglesea to Queenscliff. He started off his working life as a motor mechanic working on trucks but since a lad always wanted to be a fisherman. His first boat was found, foraged from a beach at Torquay. She was buried in the sand and needed repair and he purchased for a nominal price from the owner.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckC4-qYqAtk

I remember as a child the day she was bought home to our backyard for repairs and painting. It is bad luck to change the name of a boat, but after much research Dad could not find out what the boat was called. She was renamed' Deborah D'. She must have been happy with her name as the boat provided Dad with only good luck. Many a fish was caught and the boat looked after Dad on all sorts of occasions, from stormy weather to not drowning when he through himself over board accidently with a cray pot rope around his leg.

The boat was sold out of the family and ended up in disrepair and then was 'lost'. My brother in another story of foraging, 'found' her again by chance and repaired and bought her back 'to life'.

The boat is loved by all and brings us all together with our shared love of boats and the sea.

Each truss, is a jewelled colour sequence from red, orange to green.

The painting pictured is from a still life series painted a couple of seasons ago. At a time of great change, the tiny tomatoes ripening on the linen cloth with woven striped border were at a "crossroads". With each day passing, they ripened to a brighter red, to maturity. On maturity what was to be their destination? Were they to be gobbled up as part of a salad or sandwich or to be saved for seed? Those saved for seed, would get the opportunity to start anew. The consumed fruit, would sustain a life yet would lose its own.
She was originally collecting fabric scraps of mohair to make a quilt out of them but found them unsuitable for this purpose. As a knitter she had a doll pattern in the archives that she liked, and thought instead of knitting a doll, why not adapt the idea and construct a doll out of fabric? And so the Smiley Momos were born. Every doll and smile is different, every little character assumes a personality as they are carefully stitched together.

As well as her dolls, she constucts collage assemblages and at present is knitting a beautiful 'cobweb' of a scarf in fine 2 ply Italian grey angora (below) that is breathtaking!

"Once upon a time there was a little grey haired lady who collected bits and pieces of mohair.
One day she said to herself, 'what will I do with all this mohair?'
She decided to make little people with big happy smiles, hoping that they would bring smiles and happy thoughts to young and old and in the middle human beings.
Smiley Momos were born.
Since that day they have been adopted by babies and toddlers, children of all ages, grumpy 60 year old blokes, 90 year old grandmas, well people and unwell people and every one inbetween.
Momos have been posted across the seven seas and one, like Paddington, was lost at Flinders Street station. "The Moonah pieces are primarily 925 sterling silver, some with a hint of resin, latex or enamel. Street art, cartoons, surf/skate/snowboard art, industrial/mechanical drawings, lettering, logos and typography, comics, children's books, japanese woodcuts, to name a few!

What drives you to produce what you do?
It's something I love to do, and something I need to do. It keeps me on an even keel.

What handmade item do you cherish?
Perfectly carved slices of avocado, chunky cubes of goat's cheese and a splash of beetroot marmalade, skilfully arranged on a piece of sourdough toast. Created by Annie's Provedore in Barwon Heads and cherished by me on a regular basis - usually Friday or Saturday morning

Besides your creative work, what else do you do and enjoy doing?
Gardening, playing guitar and ukulele, watching animated movies especially in 3D, exercising, surfing, hanging out in the garden with my partner Philippa and our cat PK

Artists you admire?
Street artists like Banksy, Hera, Space Invader...children's book illustrators Shaun Tan and Graeme Base...Doug Bartlett (Nick Morris and Dave Bowers)...the work they produce is beautiful and the processes they use mind blowing!

Can you describe your creative process?
It's not really organised enough to describe it as a process...the ideas are constantly bubbling away, ideas and images become sketches, some of which are abandoned immediately and then often turn up in later work. Relatively few are worked and reworked through to the final stage. I tend to jump around a lot. Different styles, different media, I get really carried away....there are so many ideas, so much inspiration all around, new things to try...it's exciting rewarding obsessive compulsive joyful chaos!!

Then I have to go back to my gardening work and it all simmers back down to bubbles again. Until my next day off...

What can make your day?
Most of my daily feel-good moments come from connecting with people in some way...sharing a laugh with Phil, a brief exchange with a stranger down at the shops, coffee and chats with a friend, getting an email from someone I haven't heard from for a while. All that stuff means a lot to me.

Favourite Quote?
'An artist cannot fail - it is success to be one'
My mum passed that one on to me...not sure where it came from, but it means a lot to me. Not just the literal meaning, which in itself is wonderful, but it also speaks volumes about the support I get from her. She wrote it on the back of an old envelope and gave it to me years ago, when I was feeling like a complete failure and making a bit of a mess of my life. I still have it, it's one of my treasures.
When about to put this dolly's head through a hole on the fragment of lace cloth (the starting point of the costume) I thought of the artist Mirka Mora. Many years ago I attended a workshop and spent some time with her,. Her hair was greying at the time, dark eyes and ruby lips. She expressed herself lots of cheeky smiles and giggles and had wicked sense of humour. This dolly with flowing grey hair ( of old darning wool) and flowing dress for me has a spirit like that of the Mirka I remember.Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12321281967510064693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7262723363752744860.post-18303729093305457462012-01-04T05:14:00.000-08:002012-01-04T05:23:43.088-08:00Girl with AttitudeA friend delivered a box of treats tonight! A beautiful tatterered, woven and drawn threadwork cloth, very, very passed its useby date, has become a costume for this little character with attitude.

I stitched the fine linen cloth onto a dolly shape, filled the sections with a soft washed and carded wool and she started to come to life

. The limbs twisted and turned and even before she had a face, she had a mind of her own.

The hair was form an old card with darning wool on it, and the pig tails emerged after the wound section was cut away from the card and stitched into a wig shape.

I thought the section of embroidered cloth with the most holes and wear would make an old time dress.

The doll and the cloth had other ideas!

I slipped a holed section over her head and the piece became a cheeky little' short dress number'. Of course under the 'cossie' she has some very classy underwear. Pink lace knickers and bra. ...and she has the cutest of belly buttons.Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12321281967510064693noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7262723363752744860.post-56798940760731204072012-01-04T04:54:00.000-08:002012-01-04T04:54:34.123-08:00Dolly Watercolour Portrait

Today sewed together a quilt, pillow and the pocket is being used as is for the sheet. The tiny quilt is an odd shape as I could not bear to trim the shape to a regular size. As it worked out the shape links with the little pillow and is like a small relief sculpture. The quilt is backed with linen and the layers are tufted/tied with cotton thread to secure the layers
Decided it was time that it had a new life. My son,an apprentice builder mended a leg that was broken and I mended some cane weaving in the sides with some dried bracken stems that I had split into flat pieces. Then very carefully I freshened the paintwork, taking great care to keep the old and worn charm of this gem.

Finally to work to make a mattress and bedlinen.( Really made out of linen too.) The mattress and pillow I filled with washed and carded wool for the old fashioned slightly lumpy look. Then onto the quilt. A well washed linen/cotton Firetail Finch T Towel with screen- printed tricycle, padded with a traditional thin cotton quilt filler. All assembled and ready for sleeping in!.

The cot was photographed at Tobias and the Cat, Hessse Street, Queenscliff.
I get a lot of pleasure making something from an item that is past its use by date. In this case a worn and tattered old apron has a new life in the form of a small quilt. After carefully laundering and unpicking there was enough to 'build' a pieced quilt of simple squares. Some of the squares are pieced and patched. The apron strings form a border top and bottom.Debhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12321281967510064693noreply@blogger.com0
